To peter out bedeutet im Englischen nicht, dass Peter raus muss, oder dass jemand den schwarzen Peter hat. To peter out heißt zum einen auslaufen, im Sinne von allmählich weniger werden, oder schmaler bzw. enger werden.

z.B.:

This road will peter out to the end, so you will have to walk.

We still habe theses goods in store, but by the end of the year they will peter out.
