Die Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika haben eine Tradition in einem rigiden Umgang mit dem Konsum von akoholischen Genussgiften. So ist das Alter für den Kosum von Alkohol gesetzlich auf über 21 Jahre festgelegt. Während in Deutschland Jugendliche durch Alkopops sanft an den Alkoholismus herangeführt werden, behelfen sich junge US Amerikaner mit Klebstoff, Farbsprays und Hustensaft die Zeit zur gesetzlichen Erlaubnis zum Verzehr von alkoholischen Betäubungsmittlen zu überbrücken. Besonderer Beliebtheit erfreut sich in diesem Zusammenhang ein Hustensaft deutschen Farbrikats der Marke Robotussin (R). Wenn ein junger US Staatsbürger besonders enthemmt von übermäßigem Genuss des Medikaments, seine grob-, und feinmotorischen Fähigkeiten einbüsst und sich in seinem Verhalten enthemmt und auffällig von den sozialen Normen abhebt, nennt man diesen Zustand: tussed up.

Oft glaubt man verstanden zu haben, was der Englisch sprechende Gesprächspartner gerade von sich gegeben hat, aber an dessen Reaktion merkt man, dass da doch Einiges nicht so richtig angekommen ist.

Das liegt vielleicht nicht einmal unbedingt daran, dass Ihr Englisch schlecht ist und Sie Ihre Vokablen nicht können. Ein Sprache zu beherrschen heisst nicht nur, ihren Wortlaut zu verstehen, sondern bedeutet vielmehr auch, in ihrer „interkulturellen Grammatik“ bewandert zu sein.

Besonders Briten sind die Großmeister der indirekten Andeutung. Während das deutsche Konversationsmodell auf Effizienz geeicht ist und die Dinge beim Namen nennt, bevorzugen die Briten einen eigentümlichen Konversationsstil, mit allerhand  Zweideutigkeiten.

Continental Europeans might have wondered that in GB, US and other remnants of the British Empire the scale units are often different. This might be due to the fact that especially Britons have not quite come to terms with the fact that their times as a predominant power are over and accepting the metric system, or getting rid of some more of their eccentrities, would make their lives and interaction with them easier. But don’t we love the British for their quirks and oddities.
