Z ist nicht nur der letzte Buchstabe im Alphabet, darin macht auch das Englische keine Ausnahme, sondern auch Gegenstand einer interessanten Redewendung.
To grab some Z’s heisst auf Deutsch so etwas wie ein Nickerchen machen. Der Ausdruck hat seinen Ursprung in der Tatsache, dass in Cartoons Figuren, die sich eine Mütze Schlaf gönnen, in der Sprechblase mehrere Z’s von sich geben, was wohl lautmalerisch ein Schnarchen illustrieren soll.

Identical English words with different meaning are your everyday pitfalls for ESL (English as a second language) learners. In this example, the noun, or adjective Polish, as identifier for everything from Poland, is at least capitalized and can, therefore, easily be distinguished from the verb to polish. Also the pronounciation is different: Polish \ˈpō-lish\ as opposed to polish \ˈpä-lish\.

Die englische Sprache unterscheidet zwar nicht wie die deutsche zwischen Morgen-, Abend-, und Götterdämmerung, aber es macht einen Unterschied, ob die Sonne auf-, oder untergeht.
Spätestens seit Tarrantino´s Gruselschocker From Dusk Till Dawn sind Abend-, bzw. Morgendämmerung auch in Deutschland ein Begriff.
Wenn es einem in Englischen dämmert, bedient man sich logischerweise der Morgendämmerung: it dawned on me.
Auch wenn es draussen kalt wird, und die Energiekosten steigen, hat im Englischen eine housewarming party nur wenig mit Vollwärmeschutz zu tun. Eine housewarming party ist schlicht und einfach eine Einweihungsparty in einer frisch bezogenen Wohnung.

I my opinion she was thinking of herself as some drop-dead-gorgous maneater that was to good for me. Well, I my opinion she was not girlfriend material either.

Oft glaubt man verstanden zu haben, was der Englisch sprechende Gesprächspartner gerade von sich gegeben hat, aber an dessen Reaktion merkt man, dass da doch Einiges nicht so richtig angekommen ist.
Das liegt vielleicht nicht einmal unbedingt daran, dass Ihr Englisch schlecht ist und Sie Ihre Vokablen nicht können. Ein Sprache zu beherrschen heisst nicht nur, ihren Wortlaut zu verstehen, sondern bedeutet vielmehr auch, in ihrer „interkulturellen Grammatik“ bewandert zu sein.
Besonders Briten sind die Großmeister der indirekten Andeutung. Während das deutsche Konversationsmodell auf Effizienz geeicht ist und die Dinge beim Namen nennt, bevorzugen die Briten einen eigentümlichen Konversationsstil, mit allerhand Zweideutigkeiten.

Der Hund ist, zumindest in Deutschland, noch immer der beste Freund des Menschen. Und während Amerikaner ihre Hunde, wenn Sie mal schlecht drauf sind, schon mal kurzerhand zum Psychologen schicken und ihnen Antidepressiva verabreichen, dienen sie Asiaten als Grundlage für leckere Spezialitäten (Hund-Tun-Tang). Auch die Kommunikationsform des Menschenfreundes, Gebell, ist nicht für jedermann ein Genuss. Dennoch gibt es auch im Englischen einige Redewendungen, die das nicht immer angehmene Vierbeinersprech von Waldi, zum Mittelpunkt haben:
his bark is worse than his bite = bellende Hunde beissen nicht
z.B.: This guy is all talk, his bark is worse than his bite.
to bark up the wrong tree = an der falschen Adresse sein
z.B.: If you think I will clean up this room for you, you´re barking up the wrong tree.
Beware: bark kann als Substantiv auch die Baumrinde bedeuten.
Oft ist es am besten unangenehme Kommentare an sich abtropfen zu lassen, indem man Gleichgültigkeit äußert. Im Englischen können Sie dies tun, indem Sie sich der Ausdrücke so what? respectively what about it? bedienen. Zum Beispiel:
You didn´t do your homework. So what?
You were drunk last night. What about it?
