The tree is a plant symbolizing growth, strength and persistence in the face of adversity. It is no wonder it also made its way into colloquial English and has struck roots.
to bark up the wrong tree = to talk to someone about an issue who can´t be bothered
e.g.: If you think I will take out the trash you´re barking up the wrong tree.
to be up a tree = te be in trouble
e.g.: If we can´t get this done by Friday we will be really up a tree.
not to be able to see the wood for the trees = getting lost in detail
e.g.: If you check this program for each and every bug you will not be able to see the wood for the trees.
