Although His Highness The King Elvis Presly did not distinguish between the two different terms for canines in the English language and even turned it into one. A hound is a canine whose hunting instinct is trained by the breeder to hunt prey not in its own right but to turn its spoils over to his master. They are distinguish in two types: Scent hounds who track animals by their smell (e.g. Bloodhound) and sighthounds who hunt their prey by their superior speed. (Greyhound)
A dog on the other hand hunts for prey trusting his undiluted predator instincts.
E.G. French Bullgdogs were bred to hunt rats in the mansions of French noblemen. Their masters generously were not really keen on their findings. When hunting with their master, they just wait for him to gun down the prey to retrieve it.
